Q: What improvements are planned as part of the Innovate Mound Road project?
A: Innovate Mound seeks to build a better road that is pedestrian friendly and enabled with smart technology. That means traffic flow improvements, enhanced use of public space, iconic science and features, non-motorized multi-use paths, improved pedestrian access, and improved transit stops. The new Mound Road will have intelligent transportation systems, smart traffic signals and signs, continued connected vehicle pilot projects, real-time speed monitoring, and emerging mobility features. Upon completion, Mound Road will be a world-class, state-of-the-art corridor that will use the latest technology to create an innovative, efficient and safer roadway for all users.
Q: What is happening with the planning process for the Innovate Mound project?
A: Right now, about 30 percent of the new road design is completed. This has been done with input from many residents, businesses, other stakeholders and, of course, the cities of Sterling Heights and Warren. Selection of a contractor will occur next spring. The contractor will be responsible for both completing the design and building the new Mound Road. The plan is to begin construction by the summer of 2021.The selected contractor will confirm details, such as when construction will begin, where it will begin and how it will progress. The contractor will confirm other details as well, such as how traffic will be maintained during construction. We expect these details will be available to the public by late spring 2021.
